J’adore cette maison de campagne. Louis est modeste et sage. Quand je bois son champagne, j'ai l'impression d'être dans un jardin fleuri. Le parfum des roses, le parfum du miel, complexe et profond. merveilleux!

Don't go there. They don't want to sell their wine. We were four adults and wanted to try and buy some champagne. The guy there was very cool and curt and told us, he was so busy and had lots of appointments and customers coming and no time for us. We had the strong feeling, he just wanted to get rid of us. 10 minutes later, he passed us by in town on his bike trying very hard to look the other way and not be noticed by us. If you don't want customers - close your shop. But don't lie to people.

Sotto una pioggia scrosciante siamo stati ricevuti in questa bella cantina di ay appena dopo la chiesa. Ad accoglierci il giovane proprietario estremamente gentile che ci ha fatto accomodare in un bel salone proponendoci i suoi 4 champagne: tutti ottimi, ma io ho apprezzato molto il millesimato con quella nota di miele e il rose' con quel magnifico sentore di amarena. La spiegazione dei vini che ha accompagnato la degustazione e' stata accurata e dettagliata...

Recently, I was graciously recieved by Louis Cheval-Gatinois for a tasting in Ay. I did my homework before I arrived and discovered that Louis' father, Pierre passed away a couple of years ago and all the responsiblity of running the champagne maison became Louis'. From my understanding, it was a huge loss not only for the family but also for the local community. Evidently he was quite involved in the community and a true patriach of champagne. However inspite of the family's tragic loss, I am happy to report all appears to be well at Maison Gatinois under the leadership of his son Louis. The wines are predominately pinot noir with some chardonnay which is typical for this region of the Grande Vallée.They are light as a feather and beautifully balanced. If your palate leans more towards heavy full bodied champagnes these might not be for you.That being said, the range is small with only 4 expressions including rosé. All are grand cru and terroir specific from the family's vineyards near Ay. All 4 cuvées are terrific with the grand cru millésime being the most complex of the range. Not to mention it's an absolute bargin and can hold it's own against tète de cuvées costing 2-3 times the price from the larger houses. When tasting and talking with Mr Cheval-Gatinois his passion for producing a unique distinct high quality champagne is obvious. Do your palate a favor and check out these wonderfully expressive champagnes from Maison Gatinois in Ay.

Good choice for a champagne, from the village well known for his history of this beverage, so special around the world. Pierre Cheval-Gatinois and his wife do their best to breath life in the bubbles and taste of their champagne cuvées and do it with heart and passion.
